Who is Chris Copeland? He was born in Orange, New Jersey in 1984 and went to college in Colorado. After his final year of college he shipped himself off overseas where he has been playing for the past 5 years in Belgium, Germany and Spain. Copeland also had a small stint in the D League back in 2006/07.
Copeland stands at 6’8 and weighs 224lbs and can play both Shooting and Power Forward positions quite well. He is an athletic type of player that can guard the bigger players if he had too, but could also spread the floor on offense with his range.
Last season in Belgium he scored 21.8 PPG with a pretty handy .447 shooting from beyond the arc. Copeland also added 5.5 Rebounds per game and shot just under 80% from the line.
This off-season, under the radar the Knicks brought in Chris for a work out. Many Knicks fans searched Google high and low to find information on him. I found a video of him dropping 45 points last season and his skills really impressed me. I thought this guy could become a fan favorite with his Jamaican locks and athletic ability.
This year’s Summer League was a chance for Copeland to show he has what it takes to make the final Knicks roster. From what I have read and seen, he was a stand out for a subpar Knicks Summer League team.
He started 4 out of 5 games, averaged 13.8 PPG, .47% from the field, .41% from beyond the arc, .85% from the line and 4.0 rebounds per game. While those numbers are not fantastic, they are pretty solid considering some of his teammate’s abilities.
So where does he fit for this season? Well, Copeland has a non-guaranteed contract for this season. If he lands a spot on the roster, can he be effective enough to play a backup role splitting time with Thomas for Stoudemire? Personally, I think he could fill that role. In saying that, I would rather see a more experienced back up for Amar’e in a Kmart, Birdman or Amundson, but my gut feeling also says Copeland could be a HUGE surprise.
