Knicks Free Agent Look In: Drew Gooden

At 6’10” 250 pounds, Drew Gooden has the size, length and body to be a solid contributor on a playoff team. Is that team the New York Knicks?

With 4 roster spots left open, the NY Knicks are in the market for a PF/C to spell Tyson Chandler. With the acquisition of hi-res-7016004_display_imageAndrea Bargnani and the uncertain health of Amar’e Stoudemire, the Knicks need to bring in another big to complement the frontline. Kenyon Martin is still on the Knicks list of players, but I believe NY is waiting out the waiver wire to see if they can get a solid player at a bargain price. That player might be Drew Gooden.

Gooden has had a lengthy career of 11 years in the NBA after playing his college ball at Kansas. His NBA league tour has taken him from Memphis and on to what seems like every franchise in the league with his latest stop in Milwaukee. That tenure came to end yesterday when the Bucks decided to use the Amnesty clause on his contract, rendering him a free agent in 48 hours if nobody claims him.

Drew has had career averages of 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds. He has a soft touch around the basket, as well as a consistent jumper from 18 feet and in. His low post ability is impressive, however his biggest challenge has been himself. He does not bring the energy every night, playing to his potential. His skill set is there for the taking, but he sometimes hogs the ball and makes questionable decisions.

Via Hoopshype:

Has good agility, athleticism and mobility… Great rebounding skills… Effective hook shot… Understands his role as a hustle player… Doesn’t pass the ball much.

This is a chance for Drew Gooden to resurrect his career if he wants to. If he “wants to” is the first hurdle in his resurrection. If he does “want to” and he listens to the coaching staff, Drew could be a tremendous asset to this Knicks squad in the 13/14 season.

I would expect the Knicks are kicking the tires on all the available players left on the free agent market. With only the veteran’s minimum left in their wallet, NY is in the “bargain” market. Players like K-Mart and Drew Gooden are there for the taking. Who would be your choice?

I still say younger legs would be better especially since Woody seems to get through to under achievers so I would go 1. Tyrus Thomas, 2. Kenyon Martin, 3. Drew Gooden
