Shumpert is struggling through a disappointing season, and the Knicks have discussed trades involving him with several other teams, including the Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors.
Sources say the Lakers also are interested in another Knicks player — center Tyson Chandler. The Lakers did not inquire about Chandler when they called about Shumpert, but they are weighing whether to propose a Pau Gasol-for-Chandler trade, according to sources.
The Knicks are not looking to move Chandler — several teams have contacted them about him, sources said — but if a club agreed to take back struggling guard J.R. Smith, the Knicks would consider such a deal.
With Smith having signed a three-year, $18 million contract this past summer, the Lakers aren’t likely to be interested in him.
A few month ago I was talking this trade, but I was blasted for thinking this. I like Chandler, but his injury history and past performances in the playoffs really got me worried about him.
Adding someone like Pau, who is in the last year of his contract, would be a positive upgrade on the low block. Pau can shoot, pass with the best of them, and give the Knicks an offensive boost in ways that Tyson cannot. Yes you lose the defensive side of Tyson, but the Knicks will be compensated with a shorter contract, better passing and an offensive threat in the paint.
Of course a straight up trade for the Tyson and Pau would not work, I would need to make this a larger package and try to get J.R. involved in this trade. My time with J.R. is over. If only the Knicks brass thought the same way I did.
Trading Tyson, J.R. and a 2nd rounder for Pau Gasol would work for me.
