Carmelo Anthony can become a free agent next offseason, but he gave a strong indication that his plan is to re-sign with the New York Knicks.
“I’m not going nowhere,” Anthony said during an interview Tuesday with Bloomberg Television’s “Market Markers.”
“That is one of the reasons why I wanted to come here to New York, just so I could take on those pressures and those challenges. A lot of people do not like to deal with the pressure. A lot of people do not know how to deal with the challenges they face. To me, it is everyday life.”
Anthony remains hungry to lead the Knicks to their first championship since 1973. He has consistently stated he expects the Knicks to be better than last year’s team, which lost to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
These statements by Melo are soothing to my ears. Melo DID come here for the spotlight and limelight, whatever you want to call it. However, when contract time comes about, Melo and his team of rep’s will most definitely drop hints of him leaving if the Knicks do not get him and give him what he desires: max money and the best surrounding players that are available.
These are the facts that all NBA fans have to deal with when it comes to their star players and free agency. It is all well and good that Melo is saying the right things at this moment, and we all hope that Melo is in the blue and orange for years to come, but the reality is that when it’s time to talk money and contracts, will the Knicks and Melo have the mutual LOVE for each other at that moment? Time will tell.
