New York Knicks weekly breakdown: 12/9 – 12/15

What happened:

The Knicks reeled off four straight victories this week, with wins over the Nuggets, Nets, Lakers, and Cavaliers. With an 18-5 record, the Knicks opened a five-game lead in the division, along with a two-game lead over the Miami Heat for best in the East.

How it went down:

The undisputed highlight of the week was the Knicks’ thrilling victory over the Brooklyn Nets at the new_york_knicks_banner_flag_46388bigBarclays Center, as New York rode to a 100-97 win behind 45 points from Carmelo Anthony and a game winning three-pointer from Jason Kidd to sneak by Brooklyn and solidify themselves as the best in the Atlantic. The Knicks also continued their undefeated run at home by taking down the Nuggets, Lakers, and Cavaliers at The Garden.

What we learned:

The Knicks are the best team in the Eastern Conference, simply put. So long as Carmelo Anthony continues playing at his current rate–he’s already the league’s MVP through one quarter of the season–and Mike Woodson can positively implement Amar’e Stoudemire into the offense, this team will not be beat. Not by the Miami Heat, not by the Boston Celtics, not by anyone. From top to bottom, New York is the deepest, most efficient and well-balanced team in the conference.

Melo injured:

During the third quarter of New York’s victory over Los Angeles, Carmelo Anthony was fouled hard by Lakers’ center Dwight Howard, resulting in a sprained left ankle for Anthony. Fortunately for the Knicks, the injury was not deemed as serious, but Carmelo was still given rest when the lowly Cavaliers came to town on Saturday night. With Jeremy Lin and the Houston Rockets coming on Monday night, look for Anthony to return to action.

Up next:

The Knicks continue their homestand this week as they face the Houston Rockets, Brookyln Nets, Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves before hitting the road for a West Coast road trip over Christmas.
